Pilates is a holistic exercise system designed to elongate, strengthen and restore the body to balance. Pilates has been developed and practiced since the 1920s when Joseph Pilates and his wife, Clara taught their body conditioning method called "Contrology" in New York. While Joe died in 1967 development of the Pilates method has continued and his approach to total well-being and principles of breath, concentration, centre, control, precision and flow remain at the heart of the method.
There are many and varied benefits from Pilates, including but not limited to:
- improving posture;
- balance and co-ordination;
- relieving stress, tension and improving overall wellbeing; and
- alleviating aches and pains.
This means Pilates, both the Matwork and Equipment based sessions, can be beneficial to a wide range of people and situations and the ability through Pilates exercises to focus on areas of the body in isolation means that each session can be tailored to meet your needs. Pilates classes are suitable for anyone regardless of age or mobility. Whatever brings you to Pilates, I aim to tailor classes to meet your individual needs and aims.
